FAQS

Does Vicks VapoRub Expire?

Families have turned to Vicks VapoRub for generations to treat coughs, as well as muscle and joint aches and pains. It’s inspiring to see how parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents break out the blue jar from the medicine cabinet when someone starts to feel under the weather. As soon as that jar opens, the soothing scent of Vicks Vapors fills the room, taking us back to a time of comfort, nostalgia, and relief. But we’d like to clear the air, before you consider lathering on VapoRub from a decades-old jar.

To be clear – VapoRub, like any other over-the-counter medicine, has an expiration date, and should NOT be used past that date.

Our advice? Don’t throw away the empty jar if it reminds you of happy times. Clean it out and wash it thoroughly, then use it to store household items like paper clips or Q-tips. More importantly: Go buy yourself a new jar of Vicks VapoRub. Keep reading for more commonly asked questions about Vicks VapoRub.

What’s in Vicks VapoRub?

The VapoRub that generations of families know and love is formulated with three active ingredients: camphor, eucalyptus oil, and menthol. These three ingredients are all cough suppressants. They’re

combined into an ointment at levels in which they can deliver soothing, medicated vapors that last for up to 8 hours.

Camphor and menthol are also topical analgesics. In short, that means VapoRub can also temporarily relieve minor aches and pains for muscles and joints.

Where can I use Vicks VapoRub?

VapoRub should only be applied externally, on the chest and throat to relieve cough, or on muscles and joints to temporarily relieve aches and pain.

How to Use Vicks VapoRub

The way you apply VapoRub depends on what you’re looking to find relief for – cough or muscle & joint aches and pains. It’s also important to note that VapoRub is only for adults and children 2 years and over. Use as directed on the label.

To suppress a cough from minor throat and bronchial irritation associated with the common cold, rub a thick layer of VapoRub on the throat and chest. VapoRub is an ointment – so you may want to wear loose clothing around these areas so that the vapors can reach your nose and mouth. You can also cover your chest with a warm, dry cloth. VapoRub can be used up to three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare provider.

To temporarily relieve minor muscle and joint aches and pains, rub onto the affected area three to four times daily. As always, we recommend talking to your healthcare provider as needed.
